Walter Lockwood: Photographer

Walter Lockwood’s photography is known to incorporate multiple values. In his latest series, “Sukiyaki Western” Lockwood blends elements such as cultural reference, eye catching imagery, shock value, pop iconography, and historic/art/political ideas.

Using the plasticity of the film/photography medium, Lockwood’s re-interpretation of “Spaghetti Western” as “Sukiyaki Western” demonstrates media and culture constantly and quickly consuming and re-creating itself. According to the artist, “By casting Asian actors as “Cowboys/Gunslingers” and using a palette as open and malleable as the western film genre, I am participating in and illustrating the dissolving of cultural values and reference points.”

Walter’s fine art imagery has won numerous awards and been selected by curators, galleries, and group shows internationally. Recently and among others, his work has been auctioned at “Art Seen 3” to benefit AIDS research, an event juried by Howard Fox, Curator of Contemporary Art, LACMA, featured in the group show “Accessorize” at the Los Angeles Art Association curated by Peggy Fogelman, Director of Education and Interpretation for the Essex Peabody Museum, and shown at the London Photographic Association, London, UK. An upcoming Solo Show in Nov. 2008 at HAUS Gallery, Pasadena will feature “Sukiyaki Western”. Walter also works in the commercial and editorial photography industries.
