Stephanie Han Windham: Painter

Stephanie Han Windham was born on June 10, 1971 in Seoul, S. Korea, and emigrated to Southern California in 1978.

She showed artistic aptitude from early on, but it wasn’t until her senior year in high school when she learned that art school could be a viable option. She attended the Laguna College of Art & Design in Laguna Beach, CA and graduated with a BFA degree in Illustration in 1995. She then went on to obtain an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1999 and moved back to Southern California. She found work in graphic design, and it was interesting to her how her day job started informing her paintings.

She’d always been inspired by manga (Japanese comic books) and European fin de siècle (late 19th century) posters, not only for their masterful uses of line, but also for their balanced and harmonious compositions. She started her Graphic Flora series because she was interested in the beauty and complexity of floral forms, but wanted to marry the organic with the structure and order of graphic design. The natural forms within her paintings are carefully composed, but also vibrate with life and sensuality.
